Ephesus / Selcuk - The Basilica of St. John

The ruins of the basilica of St. John rest under the shadow of a Byzantine castle. Built in the 500's the basilica was once the second largest church in the world after theHagia Sophia in Constantinople / Istanbul.

Byzantine gate.

Ruins and castle.

Hauntingly beautiful.

Details.

What was once an interior hallway feels like a street.

Artifacts.

Spiral columns.

Interesting column capital.

A little wren was singing its heart out.

One of my favorite images from this trip!

Arches.

From the hilltop where the basilica is located you look out over a very old mosque towards the sea. The flat terrain in the foreground is where the old harbor of Ephesus was before it silted in. Here, a mother stork feeds her young.
